[[Impression Counts?]]

I've recently come to realise what a self-conscious, status-conscious breed we Singaporeans actually are.

Several people I know, have in recent weeks, bought cars and costly properties just to impress people around them. I may be wrong, but they don't look like the type who draws high salaries, so unless someone left them a sizable inheritance, such purchases would leave them drained financially.

Throughout my entire life, I've come across at least four such people with four different motives behind their "buying to impress".

The first kind buys to impress his girlfriend and wants her to think he's rich. The second kind seeks to "wow" people around him who wouldn't otherwise have thought he'd able to afford such luxuries.

The third type buys in response to criticism, comparing him to another person who already owns what he doesn't. Last but not least, there's the fourth type, who feels compelled to make the purchase thanks to peer pressure.

But why spend tens of thousands on things we don't really need instead of putting the money to better use on things we really need?

I am not surprised these people will also be the ones who go around complaining, a few months down the road, that their "money not enough".

Anyhow spend, of course not enough lah!

[[Good Movies, Where Art Thou?]]

My oh my, where have all the good movies gone?

The past three months must have been the most boring months of my life, as far as moviegoing is concerned.

Apart from the occasional "looked promising, eventually disappointing" flicks like Eagle Eye and Mummy 3, all there was to choose from were bullshit films like Hancock, lame, boring romantic comedies like Four Christmases, or animation flicks meant for kiddos. And much less would I even contemplate watching the second rate regional movies, of course.

Which brings me to the following questions. Where have all the blockbusters gone to? And the Oscar-worthy films? What, maybe all the good Hollywood producers have decided to go on a retreat together?

At this rate, I'd be better off concentrating on watching television series as I've been doing for the past three months.

So bye bye my dear cinemas. At least for now.
